Drone Files

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

I have uploaded some drone files to the site.  Play these in the background, looped (in Quicktime, or some other player) while you practice your scales, etudes and pieces.  They are great for improving intonation.

Here is a link to the files:

Use them and enjoy better intonation!

Expanding My Skype Music Studio

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Last month I had the good fortune to work with bass players in both Kansas City and Oakland, California at two great Bass Workshops. One was run by the fantastic Johnny Hamil, and the other by the unstoppable Barry Green. I had a great time seeing familiar faces and meeting a host of new bass players!  It was a fantastic month and I returned home inspired on many levels.

As you may know, I have been teaching bass and composition, as well as coaching string players, via Skype and iChat since 2009. It has been a great experience and has allowed me connect with musicians of various backgrounds, levels and ages. Maybe it was due to the success of the Skype masterclasses in Oakland, (Guests from Jerusalem, Brazil, China, and more!) but I had a number of people ask me about my teaching via Skype when I was traveling. It got me thinking about my Skype Studio and I got so excited that I have decided to expand!

So, if you are a bassist, composer, string player, or “alternative” string player, who is seeking lessons, or a single coaching, then check out the online education section or email me here. You can have access to a Conservatory Professor right in your own home.

Perhaps you already have a fine teacher, but need an outside coaching session. Maybe you  are preparing for an audition and want a new set of ears. Possibly, you have worked on the techniques in my Slap Bass Instructional Video and want individualized attention. If so,then check out the online education section, or contact me with specific questions.

Looking forward to hearing you!

Donovan Stokes, “Dr. D”

Dr. D and Beau Sample Slap Bass in Wisconsin!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

This weekend I am on the road teaching at the Richard Davis Bass Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition to Richard Davis, there are a number of “heavy hitters” on hand including Rufus Reid, and the legendary Jerry Jemmot.

Friday April 2, 2010 is the clinician concert and I will be one of many people performing. I am pleased to say I will playing Slap Bass with Chicago-based Slapmaster Beau Sample. Beau and I have taught at the conference before, and we both lived in San Antonio for a time, but this is our first time performing together.  If you are a young bassist, then I hope you are attending the conference! If not, then Beau and I hope to see you in the audience Friday night!

For those Rockabilly Slap Bass fans who can’t make it to Wisconsin this weekend, I will be giving a live session on Upright Slap Bass (Rockabilly/Psychobilly/Jazz, etc.) as part of the Bass Coalition Summer Workshop June 24-26, 2010.
